The ISWA 2019 World Congress Program about to be published

After several weeks of hard work, the Organizing Committee of the ISWA World Congress 2019 has been able to notify the acceptance of the first papers that make up the Official Program of the Congress.

As had already anticipated, the level of the papers received has been very high, and this fact has prevented the acceptance of many other good quality abstracts. During these days more than 200 authors are being notified of the acceptance of the selected works.

Among the flagship projects that ISWA currently has in hand there are the campaign to close macrodumpsitesros in developing countries, the campaign against marine litter in our seas and oceans and a report on the impact of the 4th industrial revolution in the waste management industry. Throughout the three days of the Congress a plastic waste calculator, the report on how Industry 4.0 is transforming the waste management sector and an ISWA document (position paper) on extended reponsibility of the waste producer (EPR) will be presented at the Euskalduna Palace in Bilbao.

Among the more than 50 sessions that will take place during the 3 days of the Congress, between October 7 and 9, 2019, there are many that look very promising.

In the keynote speeches of the opening ceremony we will be able to hear inspiring messages about marine litter, about the circular economy and its job opportunities and about cases of extreme weather as a result of climate change.

Within the thematic sessions that will last during the three days of the Congress until the closing ceremony, there will be at least two complete panels on marine litter in our seas, on circular economy and employment opportunities and on communication and social issues. Also  the debates on the 4th industrial revolution and its impact on waste management, on the recycling of electronic waste, on the management of organic and food waste, on the reuse and recycling of textile waste and on the situation of waste management in developing countries and international cooperation programs.

The panels will consist of between five and seven speakers and each presentation will have a limited duration of 15 minutes, in order to accommodate the maximum number of speakers in the Congress (more than 300).

Several round tables have been scheduled, highlighting one dedicated to discussing arguments in favor and against the incineration of waste, another one discussing the suitability of public or private waste management and a third one  analyzing the reasons for the high percentage of failures in waste treatment infraestructure projects.

A local session is also planned in which Bilbao, Biscay and the Basque Country will have the opportunity to present to a select audience how they have managed to pass in 3 decades to a vanguard position regarding waste management. The Basque Country has a beautiful natural environment, marked by industrialization, which in recent years has been recovered and preserved, while, through good governance and a successful public-private partnership policy, several leading waste management infrastructures have been created. These can be visited at the end of the Congress.

As for the Latin American session, the quantity and quality of the abstracts received have encouraged the Organizing Committee to extend its duration, going from covering a single day, as originally planned, to extending along the three days of the Congress.

The scientific program will be completed with an exhibition of works in digital posters, in which the authors of each work will explain it live to those attending the Congress who are interested. For each selected work there will be a scheduled time for a brief presentation by its author.

The preliminary program of the ISWA 2019 World Congress will be published shortly, but the deadline to register as a congressman is already open. See you in Bilbao in less than 4 months!
